Traveling Women

While the idea of “fall” may make you think of turning leaves, pumpkins, and apple cider, to a W&M Law School Admissions Dean, it means travel, travel, and more travel! Dean Shealy and I travel all around the country this time of year to meet with prospective students at fairs and forums and spread the William & Mary love. I have just returned from Atlanta, my very first forum, and luckily, I avoided any traveling mishaps. The Atlanta forum was certainly a learning experience for me, but I’ve also compiled a list of tips for you:

  1. Don’t just grab a viewbook and bolt like you stole it – talk to us! It’s lonely on the road and we all love talking to interested students. This is your opportunity to talk to a real person, instead of relying on a publication or website; take advantage of it! If you’re nervous, don’t worry; we get nervous talking to you too.
  2. If you had a great experience with a law school representative, let us know! I love having thank you emails waiting in my inbox when I return home.
  3. Do your research. Forums and fairs offer the fantastic opportunity of having representatives from law schools all over the country in one place, all waiting to talk to you! You can get a list of participating schools beforehand from the LSAC website, as well as a map to show where each school will be located. Try to research schools before you get there, so you’re already armed with basic knowledge (like LSAT medians, types of programs, etc.) and you can then use your time talking to the law school representatives to figure out whether their school is the best school for you.
  4. Contrary to the advice in #3, visit a couple of schools that you don’t know much about. You might walk away from their table thinking that you have found your law school.
If you’re interested in William & Mary Law, come out and see us! Here is our forum schedule:

  • September 20th: Miami LSAC Forum (Dean Thurston)
  • September 26th-27th: New York LSAC Forum (Dean Shealy)
  • September 29th: Boston LSAC Forum (Dean Shealy)
  • October 11th: Chicago LSAC Forum (Dean Thurston)

We’ll also be traveling to over twenty college campuses for graduate and professional school fairs this fall; check with your school to see if we’re visiting you! What about the West Coasters, you ask? We’ll be there for LSAC forums early next year.

Hope to see you there!
