Law School Ranks 14th Among U.S. Law Schools in Recent Graduates Securing Federal Clerkships

Slightly more than 24 percent of our Class of 2017 graduates (51 out of 208) are serving in judicial clerkships overall (almost nine percent in federal clerkships, more than 15 percent in state clerkships).  Read more.

Faculty Honors

Professor Emerita Jayne Barnard was the guest of honor at the unveiling of her portrait during Law Alumni Weekend. In fitting tribute to her renown as a trailblazer, Professor Barnard's portrait is the first portrait of a woman that will have a place of honor on the Law School's walls. Read more.

The American Society of International Law honored Professor Jay Butler with the Lieber Prize, given each year to the author of the most outstanding article in the field of law and armed conflict. Read more.

Plumeri Awards for Faculty Excellence

Professors James G. Dwyer, Allison Orr Larsen, Thomas McSweeney, and James Y. Stern are among 20 talented and trailblazing professors from William & Mary to receive the 2018 Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence. The award was established in 2009 thanks to a generous gift from Joseph J. Plumeri II '66, D.P.S. '11. Read more.

A $1 million gift from Jim Penney J.D. '83 and LauraLeigh Young will support the newly created James A. Penney and LauraLeigh Young Scholarship in Law Endowment and the Class of 1983 William B. Spong, Jr., Scholarship in Law Endowment. Scholarships are the top priority of our For the Bold campaign. Read more.

Robert H. Thomas of Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert in Honolulu will teach during the fall semester as the inaugural Joseph T. Waldo J.D. '78 Visiting Chair in Property Rights Law. The chair is named in honor of alumnus Joseph T. Waldo J.D. '78, founder of Waldo & Lyle in Norfolk, who served as Co-Chair of the annual Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Conference from 2004-2017. Reunion Classes Honor Past, Build Strong Future with Record Gifts and Pledges of $6.4 Million to Date

On April 13 &14, our alumni demonstrated that they know how to celebrate during Alumni Weekend and also help their alma mater. Ten reunion classes have raised a record $6.4 million in gifts and pledges to date.The previous reunion giving record, set in 2016, was $5.9 million.  Read more.
"The Survey Says": 3L Class Gift Breaks 90 Percent Participation for Fifth Straight Year

Dean Davison Douglas, Vice Dean Patty Roberts J.D. '92, along with teams of faculty and 3Ls celebrated the achievement (and the last day of classes) with the first-ever Marshall-Wythe Family Feud game with survey questions from the 3L class. Read more.
Moot Court Team Ranks 10th in Nation

Our Moot Court team is ranked 10th in the nation according to new data compiled by the University of Houston Law Center. "The team was motivated to take the competition experience to the next level," said Jennifer R. Franklin, Professor of the Practice of Law and the Moot Court Program's faculty advisor. "The students encouraged each other to strive to excel in all that they did. Each individual competition team worked together sharing their individual strengths and, as a result, the students became better advocates." Read more.
The ABA Journal quoted Professor Tara Leigh Grove in its April feature article titled "The Executive Branch Pushes the Boundaries of the Separation of Powers." Read the story

A story in The Atlantic discussed three briefs filed in Trump v. Hawaii. Among them, a brief written by Professor Nathan Oman that was filed by a group of religious scholars that discusses efforts to exclude 19th-century Mormon immigrants. "The Robots Are Coming!": Professor Fred Lederer, Visiting Assistant Professor Iria Giuffrida LL.M. '02, and Visiting Associate Professor Nicolas Vermeys talked about the effort of the Center for Legal and Court Technology to prepare students and courts for rapidly evolving technologies and their spring team-taught course, "Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technologies, and Their Effects on the Legal Landscape."

Artificial Intelligence Legal Issues International Paper Competition Results Announced

Supported by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (funded in turn by Cisco), the Center for Legal and Court Technology's international faculty have been studying the legal issues arising from Artificial Intelligence, the Internet-of-Things, Data Analytics, and associated technologies. As part of its continuing work, CLCT invited law students in the European Union, Canada, and the U.S. to submit papers setting forth novel legal issues posed by these rapidly expanding technologies. The winners, all of whom will receive cash prizes funded by the Community Foundation grant, were recently announced. Learn more (and read the winning papers!)
Annual Day of Giving Sets New Record

William & Mary celebrated its fifth annual One Tribe One Day on April 10 and surpassed all previous records made on the university's single biggest day of giving. An impressive 539 alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends contributed $158,401 to the Law School. Watch our video below, "Giving Back to Pay It Forward."
