Some Unfortunate News
These past few weeks, I have been trying to get a headstart for next summer's job search and I've been getting some unfortunate news. I have known exactly what I wanted to do with my life for as long as I can remember: international human rights. After college and one year of law school, I was still determined to follow this career path. Notice the key word "was."
Recently I met with some really powerful international lawyers who all said the same thing: human rights law is a hobby, not a career. Now, for the first time in my life, I'm not sure what I want to do.
When I think about this advice, it makes sense. Human rights work is often aligned with charity or NGO work, and these organizations are not exactly rolling in money. Unfortunately, I, and most of the people in my generation, are slaves to our student loans. I have to make money. My dream job will have to remain a dream for a little while longer. And that's just . . . unfortunate.
