Fin: Week 11

A coworker asked me a few weeks ago what is my travel bucket list, and I simply said, “here.” I’m not sure how to sum up the experiences this summer has brought, or the amazement they have left me. However, I know a few new things.

To start, I know that one of the best ways to learn U.S. law is through comparative analysis. I have gotten to learn about practical applications of Employment and Labour Law in the United States by figuring out being compliant with U.S. funders while abroad. I have learned about the differences between U.S. Contract Law and The Swiss Code of Obligations. Much of Swiss contract and employment law is protective to employees, and yet at first glance can seem rather vague. Many of the insurances mandated by Swiss law ensure that a lot of protections are already in place ever before an employment contract is written.

I know that the only way you can tell you’ve walked across the border into France is from the road paint changing to white on the French side. I know you can have an entire conversation with the Swiss transit authority through head nodding and pointing. There’s a light rainbow from the Jet d’Eau you can see around 6pm. Swimming with the current of the Rhone at the river confluence, La Jonction, is invigoratingly cold and beautifully freeing. Locals says to swim in the Rhone is a dangerous game, but I now know the real danger exists in never doing it. Most importantly, I now know that blue cheese is in fact not blue from food dye.

On my last weekend, I went to Split, Croatia. I saw water so clear you weren’t sure where rocks stopped and sea began. My friends and I wandered around the beach, took a day trip to see the Krka Waterfalls, and watched the sunrise on the beach our last night. It’s safe to say I made the absolute most of this summer.
