Living the Rwandan Rhythm: A Week of Work, Goodbyes, and Chance Meetings

Negotiating for Human Rights: Productive Discussions with BBJ and DRC

This past week, I engaged in further discussions with BBJ and DRC about potential funding projects. We were focusing on a call for proposals that would financially support initiatives aligned with the five key principles of the Human Rights Based Approach methodology. These principles include: universal application of human rights, inclusive participation with access to decision-making, non-discrimination and equality alongside accountability and rule of law, transparency, and data-supported access to information.

Saying Goodbye: The Emotional Farewell Party for a Cherished Colleague

Midweek, we shifted gears from work to a social event. Tuesday evening was set aside for a farewell party for one of our colleagues from Fountain Advocates, a law firm that shares our office space. This lawyer, Bonard, had accepted a position as head counsel at a bank in Kigali, marking a significant career move. Our two firms, RBJ and Fountain Advocates, have a long history of collaborative work, making this departure significant for all of us.

The party was filled with camaraderie, with drinks, laughter, and a variety of baked goods from a local bakery. There were several speeches, where many expressed their gratitude for Bonard's contributions to the workplace and how he helped them professionally. To end the evening, we all gathered for a group prayer, with specific well-wishes for my time in Rwanda, which was a touching moment for me.

Later in the week, I found myself at a local pizza shop for dinner, where I ran into a friend from my tennis club. This man, a pilot for RwandaAir, has lived in Rwanda and other parts of Africa for several years. We had an engaging conversation about the unique aspects of Rwandan culture and its beauty. I've come to enjoy these chance encounters with local friends in various parts of the city.

Such random meetings also happen when we visit high schools for promoting legal advocacy. I often find myself greeted by friends on the sidewalks or while we drive out of the city. These experiences have made this city, where I currently reside, feel incredibly welcoming and much like a home.
