X: Final Reflections

“Third Culture Kid” is a term I came across while in Cape Town, which is a term, describing the experience of growing up in a starkly different reality/culture from one’s parents. Such a person exists at the intersection of cultures, bringing with them, a fair share of clashes and cohesion. Perhaps it is this background that, albeit reluctantly, prepared me for taking bold leaps—like embarking on a 7,500-mile journey across the Atlantic for a summer immersed in South African culture and history.

As this experience wraps up, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and be immersed in South-African culture and history in extremely meaningful ways. This experience enriched my understanding of the international legal space and the high potential for multi-national collaboration that exists. Specifically, as a first-generation Nigerian- American student, being able to connect with other Nigerians and African legal professionals was a key step in crafting a career that aligns with my highest goals. My hope is that with more funding for the program, more students from similar backgrounds will gain access to such a valuable experience.
