Week 8
This week I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Gender Exchange on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence at USIP as part of my internship. This conference brought together representatives from various NGOs, as well as members of the U.S. government, to discuss ongoing research and policy efforts aimed at addressing conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence.
The event highlighted a wide range of perspectives in ongoing research, with discussions focusing on sexual orientation, age, disability, class, and gender as they relate to SGBV. Researchers presented their research topics on how these factors intersect with sexual and gender-based violence, providing their perspectives on the dynamics that make certain populations more vulnerable in conflict settings. I thought discussions were particularly valuable in that they were centered on vulnerable groups that are often forgotten about in discussions about SGBV.
One of the more impactful aspects of the conference was the collaboration between various stakeholders. The presence of government officials alongside NGO representatives allowed for a meaningful exchange of ideas, and, I believe, it highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing conflict-based sexual violence. I'm grateful for this experience, which not only broadened my understanding of conflict-related sexual violence but also underscored the importance of research in shaping public policy. Being able to learn from experts in the field and engage with current research was an invaluable experience, and I truly believe I will carry it with me as I continue my legal education and career.
