Week Six: Alpine Hiking, Trains, and CEDAW
This week I was helping out with a social media plan for IBJ. Prior to law school, I worked in digital marketing, and IBJ’s founder has expressed interest in me helping out in this area. I did a full audit of the organization’s social media presence and developed specific goals for each platform for the next quarter. I also started brainstorming content ideas and created several social media posts to present to higher-ups. Hopefully I’ll be able to help increase IBJ’s presence and reach online over the next few weeks, since there are no full-time marketing employees. The hope is to get them started on a system/pattern, so that they will be able to maintain their social media after I leave.
I also continued my research on women’s issues in Indonesia. It was an interesting exercise in comparative law to read Indonesia’s Constitution. They have a whole section on human rights, and their list is much longer and more detailed than the Bill of Rights. It specifically includes the right to work, the right to social security, the right to obtain medical care, and the right to an education. There are also caveats to some of the rights–-freedom of speech, for example, is to be “regulated by law.” It’s interesting to me that there are so many rights listed, and yet through my other research I’ve realized that a lot of these rights exist in name only.
While Indonesia has adopted the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women, there are several laws on the books that directly oppose CEDAW. There is still a marital exception to rape, for example.
Outside of work this week:
- Kejsi and I took the first train out and went on a hike in the Alps. It was a long journey to nearly the center of the country, but the views from the train were incredible. We took a funicular, then a chairlift to the top of the mountain and hiked 5 miles across the ridge. The views were panoramic and absolutely gorgeous.
- We met another intern, Hayden, in Bern for dinner and then headed back to Geneva.
