The Law School is state-supported. Why should I give?
The Law School receives approximately 8% of its budget from the Commonwealth of Virginia. While this support is important, it does not bridge the gap between the cost of top legal education and current tuition. To attract great applicants, we seek to keep tuition low, while retaining excellent teaching faculty. This is why your support is so vital!
How much does it cost to attend Law School?
Tuition & fees for Law School are considered a terrific value for the excellent legal preparation that today’s law students receive. Visit our tuition and fees page.
Does the Law School award financial aid and student scholarships?
Eighty-eight percent of our law students received scholarships or fellowships during the 2017-2018 academic year. Approximately $10.4 million in scholarships and fellowships, were disbursed to our J.D. students.
Why is giving each year important?
Annual gifts allow the Law School to meet its most pressing needs such as scholarships, library resources, and support for student organizations and journals. Marshall-Wythe currently raises over $3 million in private support each year to help bridge the gap between tuition, state funding, and the cost of providing an outstanding legal education. Without this support, the Law School would struggle to maintain its national ranking. Additionally, the level of participation is important. High alumni participation in annual giving sends a strong message to prospective students and faculty, as well as to our peer institutions, that William & Mary Law School’s graduates are loyal and their law school’s continued success is a priority.
Why make a five-year pledge to the class gift?
Every gift, no matter the level, is important. A commitment to giving each year between reunions allows the Law School to budget more accurately. Alumni who make multi-year pledges will not be asked for additional gifts until their pledges are completed. Contact the Office of Advancement for more information.
