Special Issue of Journal to Focus on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Report

The William & Mary Journal of Women and the Law will publish a Special Issue in December 2011 on the Pentagon Working Group's report on the possible repeal of the Defense Department's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. The report was released on November 30, 2010, and already has generated significant press and commentary.
"The Journal of Women and the Law has jumped ahead of the pack by organizing and scheduling a 'virtual symposium' on this important topic," said Jayne Barnard, faculty advisor to the student-edited journal and the Cutler Professor of Law and Kelly Professor of Teaching Excellence at William & Mary Law School. "Pundits everywhere this week have an opinion on the impact of the DADT study, and sound bites to offer, but the Journal will publish the first detailed and thoughtful legal analysis of the report and its consequences. This is good scholarship, and also good entrepreneurship."
The Special Issue will include articles by noted scholars examining the report through the lenses of several disciplines, not limited to law. Contributors include Elizabeth Hillman, Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings College of Law; Shannon Gilreath, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies & University Fellow in Law, Wake Forest University; and Suzanna Danuta Walters, Professor of Gender Studies, Indiana University-Bloomington.
The Journal is now in its 17th year of publication and recently was ranked among the top ten journals in its specialty.
"It's exciting to know the Journal will publish some of the first articles that critically analyze the report and advance the scholarship in this field," said Gregory K. Albert '11, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal. Brandon M. Waterman '11, Senior Articles Editor of the Journal and coordinator of the Special Issue, stated "This Special Issue is both timely and provocative and will present unique and significant perspectives on the report's impact."
