Becoming the Advocate: Zulekha Tasneem '25
{{youtube:large|rQZ33-zLf10, Zulekha Tasneem}}When Zulekha Tasneem '25 reflects on her time at William & Mary Law School, the theme that rises to the surface is clarity—not just about what she’s learning, but about who she’s becoming.
Driven by a deep desire to serve, Zulekha entered law school knowing she wanted to make a difference. What she didn’t yet know was how transformative the journey would be.
“I was always fascinated by how the law touches every part of society,” she says. “I wanted to understand it—not just academically, but as a way to advocate for others.”
That mindset made William & Mary Law a natural fit. She was drawn to the school’s reputation for mentorship, community, and its core identity as a place that molds citizen-lawyers—individuals who see the law not as a career, but as a calling.
From the beginning, Zulekha immersed herself fully. She sought out meaningful conversations, embraced leadership opportunities, and leaned into the challenges of legal education. More than just case law and doctrine, she learned how to think critically, communicate clearly, and lead with empathy.
“The community here is everything,” she reflects. “My professors know me. My classmates challenge me. I’ve grown so much by being surrounded by people who genuinely care.”
She brought that same intentionality into clinics and service projects, putting legal theory into practice and building confidence in her voice. Each opportunity reaffirmed her commitment to using the law as a tool for justice.
For Zulekha, being a law student isn’t about the prestige. It’s about the people. It’s about asking better questions, showing up with purpose, and building a life of impact.
As she prepares for what comes next, she offers this to future students:
“Don’t be afraid to lead with curiosity. Ask questions. Serve. The law is about people—and the more you connect with that, the more powerful your education becomes.”
Zulekha Tasneem’s story is still unfolding. But already, she embodies what William & Mary Law School stands for: integrity, service, and the quiet strength of someone who knows why she’s here—and where she’s going.
