Kathleen Collins ’25 and John Howell ’25 Receive Lawrence W. I’Anson Award at Law School Commencement

Kathleen Collins ’25 and John Howell ’25 received the Lawrence W. I’Anson Award, the highest award given to a graduating student by the faculty of William & Mary Law School, during the school’s commencement ceremony at Kaplan Arena on Saturday, May 17.Kathleen Collins and John Howell received the I’Anson Award from Dean A. The award is given each year to a member of the graduating class who “has shown evidence of great promise through scholarship, character and leadership.” This year’s award went to two deserving students.

Collins graduated with a B.A. in history from Dickinson College. As a law student, she served as a judicial intern for the Honorable David J. Novak of the Eastern District of Virginia and has been a fellow in the Law School’s Center for Legal & Court Technology. She also served as a summer associate for Sidley Austin in Washington, D.C., and as a staff member and Senior Notes Editor for Volume 66 of the William & Mary Law Review. She will clerk for the Honorable Rebecca Grady Jennings in the Western District of Kentucky after graduation and then return to Sidley Austin.

Howell graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rhodes College with a B.A. in political economy and philosophy and served as student body president. At William & Mary Law School he has served as Senior Articles Editor for Volume 66 of the William & Mary Law Review and competed on the Moot Court and Alternative Dispute Resolution teams. He has also served as a judicial intern for the U.S. District Courts in Richmond, as a property law teaching assistant, and as a summer law clerk for the Pacific Legal Foundation. He will clerk for the Honorable John A. Gibney, Jr. of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia after graduation.

The award is named in honor of Lawrence W. I’Anson (1907-90), who earned his undergraduate degree at William & Mary and was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia from 1974 to 1981.
