Adam Kolcon and Fiorella Villacorta Torres named 2026 Anderson Scholars
One William & Mary Law School student and one Raymond A. Mason School of Business student are named each year as Alvin P. Anderson Scholars. This year, the distinction goes to Adam Kolcon J.D. ’28 and Fiorella Villacorta Torres BBA ’27.
The TowneBank Foundation established the Anderson Scholars program in 2010 to honor Alvin P. Anderson, a 1970 graduate of William & Mary and 1972 graduate of the Law School. Anderson, who passed away in 2008, was a managing partner at Kaufman & Canoles and heavily involved in the Williamsburg and larger Hampton Roads communities.
Kolcon and Villacorta Torres were recognized at a reception held at TowneBank in Williamsburg, Virginia on September 29.
TowneBank President Alexis Swann M.B.A. ’93 and The Honorable Tommy Norment Jr. J.D. ’73, a former colleague and close personal friend of Anderson, shared remarks on Anderson’s legacy of mentorship, community leadership and uplifting young professionals, which is maintained through the annual bestowal of the Anderson Scholarship.
“When I interviewed these students, they had the spirit and enthusiasm that I believe Mr. Anderson would love and appreciate,” Swann said.
Kolcon earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Michigan. His Marine father and attorney mother raised him to be a leader dedicated to creating opportunities for others. He played junior and collegiate hockey before severe injuries brought a premature end to his playing career. Despite the setback, however, he channeled his passion for the sport into coaching and currently volunteers as an assistant coach for the William & Mary Club Hockey Team.
“When a medical condition left him facing the possibility that he may never walk again, let alone play
hockey, the future he imagined for himself suddenly looked very different,” said Law School Dean of Admissions Issa DiSciullo. “But he refused to let those circumstances define him. He dug deep, he worked hard to recover and he learned to find success in new paths and passions.”
In addition to his volunteer service with the hockey team, Kolcon stays busy as a research assistant for Professor Rebecca Green, the 2L rep for the Labor and Employment Law Society, a Law Review staff member, a Dean’s Associate and a member of the Business Law Society. He also plays on the Law School’s softball team. Kolcon plans to pursue transactional law and has accepted a 2027 Summer Associate position at Foley & Lardner LLP.
Villacorta Torres is an accounting major with a minor in data science. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a Master of Accounting at William & Mary and earn her CPA certification. She is active on campus with the Gibbs Accounting Society, Association of Latino Professionals for America, Latin American Student Union, Boehly Center Peer Mentorship Program and William & Mary Scholars Undergraduate Research Experience (WMSURE). She completed an internship with Deloitte, where she gained valuable hands-on professional experience, and has worked at the William & Mary Postal Service throughout college.
“In a sea of greatness at the School of Business, our recipient is a star,” said School of Business Interim Dean Ron Hess.
Both Kolcon and Villacorta Torres expressed gratitude for the recognition, which comes with a $5,000 scholarship and an engraved crystal vase.
“Thank you for believing in me and my future goals,” Villacorta Torres said. “I hope to leave a great legacy, just like Mr. Anderson did.”
