About the Dunn Family
H. Stewart Dunn, Jr.
H. Stewart Dunn, Jr. (1929-2016) devoted decades to supporting civil rights and civil liberties causes while also being actively involved in a range of civic activities.
Mr. Dunn was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. He graduated from Yale University in 1951 and from the Harvard Law School in 1954, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude. After serving three years in the United States Army, including the Judge Advocates Corp., he joined the Washington, D.C. law firm of Ivins, Phillips & Barker, where he practiced law for over 50 years.
Ivins, Phillips & Barker specializes in the full range of federal tax law matters. Mr. Dunn’s practice covered most areas of tax, and, more recent years, concentrated on trusts and estates, an area in which he was a nationally recognized expert. Between 1970 and 1973 he served as vice-chair of the American Bar Association’s Section on Taxation. He was a member of the American Bar Foundation, the American Law Institute, the American College of Tax Counsel, and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He served as a member of the United States Committee on the Selection of Federal Judicial Officers in 1977-1979 and as the chair from 1979 to 1981. He taught for a semester at Harvard Law School and at the Georgetown University Law Center.
Despite his busy and engaged practice, Mr. Dunn embodied William & Mary Law's School's vision of the citizen lawyer by devoting himself to civil liberties causes throughout his career. Mr. Dunn was a member of the board of directors of the ACLU of the National Capital Area, and served as its president from 1986 to 1988. He also served as a member of the board of directors of the ACLU of Virginia and as its vice-president. From 1988 until 2000 and then from 1996 to 2005, he served on the national board of directors of the American Civil Liberties Union. In his various ACLU positions, Mr. Dunn actively participated in deliberations that formulated ACLU policies and positions. Mr. Dunn provided significant financial support to all three organizations, including through a foundation he created and funded to honor his son, Tony Dunn, who died in 1980.
In addition to his commitment to promoting civil liberties, Mr. Dunn was involved in civic activities since the late 1950s. He was a member of the Alexandria (Va.) Planning Commission, serving as its vice-chair. He was a trustee of the Historic Alexandria Foundation and a member of the Alexandria Democratic Committee.
Mr. Dunn lived in the Washington, D.C. area since the 1950s. He and his wife, Loti, made their home in Alexandria, Virginia.

Timothy Dunn received his B.A. in international relations from William & Mary in 1983 and his MBA in finance from Northeastern University in 1985. He was accredited as a Chartered Financial Analyst in 1989. 
Mr. Dunn retired as a Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager of Capital Research Global Investors, part of The Capital Group Companies, an employee owned investment management firm managing individual accounts, pension assets and mutual funds, in 2009. Among his civic activities, Mr. Dunn serves as the Director of Strategic Planning of the Piedmont Environmental Council and as a Trustee of the Highland School in Warrenton, Virginia, and of The Nature Conservancy of Virginia. Remaining a leader in the William & Mary community, Mr. Dunn has served as a member of William & Mary's Board of Visitors since 2008. Mr. Dunn is also member of the William & Mary President’s Council, the International Advisory Committee of William & Mary's Reves Center for International Studies, co-chair of his Class of 1983 25th Reunion Gift Committee. and served on the National Campaign Committee for the recent $500-million Campaign for William & Mary.
Ellen Stofan received her B.S. from William & Mary in 1983, her Ph.D. from Brown University in 1989, and is currently a trustee of the College of William & Mary Foundation. She is vice president of Proxemy Research in Maryland and also an honorary professor at University College London. She conducts research on the geology of Venus, Mars, Titan (the largest moon of Saturn), and Earth. She also was co-investigator on a radar sounder for the Mars Express Mission, and is an associate member of the Cassini Mission to Saturn Radar Team. Mrs. Stofan is the co-author, with former astronaut Tom Jones, of the book Planetology: Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System (National Geographic Society, 2008). Mrs. Stofan also serves on the boards of the American School in London Foundation and the historic preservation group, the Friends of Rectortown.
Timothy and Ellen's son Ryan Dunn graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2010.
