The Center for the Study of Law and Markets seeks to advance the understanding of the role of legal institutions in promoting well-functioning markets in a free society. Commercial activity is a ubiquitous human endeavor and one that is vital to the health of modern society. Such activity does not take place in isolation but instead occurs in markets shaped by constitutional, statutory and common law. Markets also shape law, however, by creating a demand for legal rules that facilitate economic activity and settle commercial disputes. The Center contributes to the understanding of this important interaction between law and markets by identifying and supporting students with a particular interest in this topic, supporting research by affiliated scholars related to its mission, and sponsoring scholarly and public events exploring the relationship between law and markets.
