Last Days in Arusha
I'm heading back to the USA on Saturday so this will unfortunately be my last blog post for the summer. I have not updated the blog in a while, but since my last post I successfully climbed to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro on July 26. I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro for 6 days on the Machame Route with 13 other interns. Out of the 14 of us 11 of us successfully made the summit. I along with a few others friends suffered from altitude sickness on summit day, but we were able to push through and make it to the highest point in Africa. After climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro I spent a few days recovering and starting getting things in order for my return back to the States.
By and large, my internship at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda this summer has been a great learning experience. I've had the opportunity to assist in the drafting of the final oral and written judgments for the Yussuf Munyakazi case and I also was able to give my input on various legal and factual issues during deliberations on the Munyakazi case with the trial chamber judges. My supervisor and the other interns have been excellent to work with and the issues and projects that I have worked on have been very interesting. I also had the opportunity to frequently employ the writing and research skills that I learned during my 1L year at W&M.
I've also had the opportunity to visit so many fantastic places in Tanzania. Going on Safari, visiting Zanzibar and climbing Kilimanjaro were just some of the many great experiences I've had while in Africa. Ill definitely miss all the new friends that I've made and the country of Tanzania. I guess ill be signing off now, so talk to everyone stateside!
