EXCELing

As the title suggests, this week I spent A LOT of time on Excel. I had two major data analysis projects going on, which kept me quite busy. The first was continuing to code all the data collected on Egyptian Terrorism. Over 1,500 lines later it is done and the data is ready for analysis! I start work on the research and writing portion next week.

The other major project I had this week was entering files on files on files of data related to NCSC’s Caribbean Based Security Initiative. NCSC has led trainings for law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, and defense attorneys throughout the Caribbean on issues facing the region like drug trafficking, money laundering, and gang violence.

This week also brought a chance to get out of the office and attend a lecture at the Woodrow Wilson Center entitled, “Rule of Law, a Linchpin of U.S. Foreign Policy.” Senator Ben Cardin and President of the Woodrow Wilson Center, Jane Harman both spoke on the role rule of law initiatives are playing currently in U.S. foreign policy, particularly since the Trump administration began. Directly following the discussion on foreign policy, a new study sponsored by the Wilson Center was discussed on a panel with the authors as well as experts from key regions where rule of law initiatives have been based like Russia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Seeing the politicized side of rule of law shed light on the fine line those in the field navigate when developing and working on rule of law projects.

The weather FINALLY cleared up for the long Memorial Day weekend so I was able to venture out into D.C. and check some monuments and memorials off my to-do list. I finally got to see this Constitution I’ve been learning about.
