Week 7: Adventure Is Out There

This week was full of adventure, grilling, and the great outdoors. The work week really flew by because we got off early on Tuesday and were off all day Wednesday for the Fourth of July. To make the most of this mid-week mini vacation, I spent as much time outside as possible, and thankfully, the weather even cooled off a bit to make the extra sunshine bearable!

On Tuesday, I got to spend some time with Texas friends living in D.C. We grilled, stuffed our bellies with a Texas-sized meal, ate Texas-shaped watermelon, and, of course, talked about Texas until all the non-Texans were bored to tears.

On Wednesday, I went to the movies and then to another barbeque, this time with William & Mary friends. There were several contentious games of cornhole, and we ended up watching several different fireworks displays from the roof of a D.C. apartment. Some were so close, we had to keep a watchful eye out for any fireworks that went awry!

While it was back to work Thursday and Friday, the weekend held more adventure in store. On Saturday, I spent half the day walking the trails at Rock Creek Park. It was only about a 30 minute metro ride from my apartment, but it was great to escape the city and spend some much-needed time in nature. My hike covered some rocky cliffs and a serene creek, and it seemed like most of the city had the same idea as me to get out in the cool, sunny weather and enjoy the scenery.

Even though I was pretty exhausted from my hike, I couldn't pass up an invitation to go check out the Smithsonian National Zoo, which is just a short walk from the park. The zoo, which is free, is home to animals from all over the world—including some very lazy pandas, very hungry elephants, and some very sleepy cheetahs, not to mention some attention-seeking primates.

This week was an adventure, and as my time in D.C. comes to a close, I'm hoping to have as many adventures as possible. In just three weeks, I'll be back in Williamsburg, gearing up for my last year of law school. Better enjoy the freedom while I still can!
