About the Clinic

In the Community Law Clinic, students represent Hampton Roads clients facing housing, consumer, family law, and criminal records sealing issues. Students also collaborate closely with local groups to develop education materials and presentations responsive to goals identified by the community. Throughout the semester, students will not only develop litigation skills through their direct client representation but will also hone creative lawyering skills by empowering communities advocating for themselves.

In one semester, a student may defend a family facing an unlawful eviction in court, develop an interactive presentation for a partner organization, interview clients at a legal clinic in a community center, and help a client find employment by clearing her criminal history. Through a diverse case docket, students develop critical litigation skills like interviewing and counseling, developing a theory of a case, drafting pleadings, negotiating, and advocating in court.
