| This is a general mediation course that provides an exploration of the process of mediation as an alternative to litigation. Topics will include mediation history and theory; general conflict resolution techniques and strategies; mediation styles; mediation skills and techniques, including communication and facilitation skills, questioning and listening skills, reframing, power balancing, negotiation theories and practices, and interest-based negotiations; agreement writing; and professional standards for mediators and ethical considerations. Skills in these techniques will be developed through lecture, class discussions, exercises, and the extensive use of role plays. This course meets the basic training requirements for certification as a general mediator in Virginia. | ||
